st. george’s day

St. George's Day
Back in January, after I had been to a Burns Night party. I asked complained about celebrating St. George's Day. Something along the lines of this:

I’m pretty much completely English and there doesn’t seem to be any traditions where we celebrate being British or things that we’ve achieved. You’ve got Burns who was a Scottish Poet and St Andrew’s Day. You’ve got St Patrick’s Day for the Irish and St David’s Day for the Welsh. Some of the shops in town close down when it’s Eid because of the percentage of their staff have got religious celebrations. There’s Canada Day, Independence Day and Australia Day if you want a few more.Maybe we should be having a Shakespeare Party or making more of a deal about St George’s Day. Well either that or I’ll become Scottish or Irish by adoption lol.

Well, as it happens in my current temporary job we're having a St. George's Day party later today. Well I'm super excited – it means that it'll be harder work today but it'll still be good. See you on the other side.

BTW, it's also Shakespeare's Birthday – Happy Birthday Will!

366: Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year

Hello one and all. So as I write this I’m sat in my friend’s dining room discussing the music choice with some other friends. Wishing you all a Happy New Year!! Have a great night whatever you are up to.

Hope 2013 brings you all the things you hope and wish for.

219: Dear Monday

Joining with Megan from Happy Day.

Dear Monday, you’re here again – at least it’s a short week – 1 day down 2 to go.

Dear Hels, you asked me to organise games for your Baby shower – I hope you enjoyed them. I had meant to take pictures of the baby grows but my phone was broken.

Dear Baby C, I met you for the first time on Saturday and the second time on Sunday, the crown of cutest baby has transferred to yu but it might be passed onto Hel’s baby in a few weeks so enjoy it! (Kidding I’m sure you would both be stupidly cute and adorable for a whole bunch of time yet!). I got a proper hug from you on Sunday. I’m not sure you were that happy but when I passed you to O you snuggled up in his arms like you belonged there or something.

Dear Park Run, I think you kicked my butt but I came in just over 51 minutes so that made me like 134th overall although 6th in my age group sounds so much better (althought I was 6th out of 6!). I am still aching now and it’s two days later – then again it probably didn’t help trying to run the 100m yesterday as fast as I could.

Dear Our Sidekick, we ate our tea and watched the athletics on the big screen at the athletics stadium. I was all excited to try and race you on the track so I ran the 100m while you timed me then we swapped over. You were 11 seconds faster than me but you were kind of gutted that it was over 15 seconds. I was still impressed that you could run 100m in 17 seconds!

Dear Chris, it was your birthday yesterday – how does it feel to be 27 years and 1 day?

089: Passions – Mrs GLW

Logo ideas for blog series that's happening next week on my blog to celebrate its blog birthday
Five years ago I started blogging – I’d been trying to find somewhere to release my crazy rambles when I found WordPress and got started (I think it was also procrastination from my dissertation while at university). This week marks this celebration and I thought I’d get some of my friends to share about their passions. Here is blog post number two…..(I did think over posting this but I realised that I had asked about what makes people passionate and things like Domestic Abuse aren’t discussed enough – in one sentence MAKE IT STOP!)

My passion is to see my daughter live in a world in which her value does not come from her ability to have sex, make babies or look pretty. A world in which my son is not required to lose some of himself in order to fit in the man box, a box where he must have limited emotion and be valued by the money he earns or the amount of sex he has.

I will work my whole life to see violence against women reduced and ultimately ended. In every culture, in every town, village or city the world over, there are women who are being abused and devalued, whether through domestic abuse, widow cleansing, rape as a weapon of war, FGM, prostitution, lower wages for women workers, street harassment, pornography or the many other forms of devaluing and abusing of women. I want to see this ended, as soon as possible.

How can this happen? It can happen as each of us take responsibility for our lives, for how we raise our children, how we respond to every woman we meet. Do we challenge those who make sexist remarks? Do we speak out against the abuse of women in pornography, or do we call it a purity issue and miss the point?

The more egalitarian a society, the less abuse of women there is. What are we doing to bring about an equal society? How are we challenging the stereotypes and boxes of gender that the world, and the Church, places on people?

Everywhere I go, everything I do is with one goal in mind; the end of abuse of women. It is a big goal, some may say an impossible goal, but that does not deter because I follow and serve He who can do more than I could ever ask or imagine, and if I can ask and imagine the end of abuse of women, what else is He going to do?!

Mrs GLW was another one of those serendipitous people that I met via Twitter. You can find Mrs GLW’s blog here or follow her on Twitter.

088: My Blog’s Birthday

Today my blog turns 5 years old. A day under a month to my 26th Birthday – yes I am probably going to mention it a whole bunch more times between now and then just so that you can’t forget or pretend you didn’t know.

It’s had it’s ups and it’s downs. There’s been posts where I’ve been scared by the number of views. There have been posts where I’ve wondered if anyone is actually out there and listening/reading. I’ve shared events in my life like when my Grandma passed away and when my cousin got married. I might have even shared my own wedding (actually it seems I didn’t – but I did post on our First Anniversary).

And most recently how we gained Our Sidekick and Two Guinea Pigs.

I think I’ve questioned why I write and wondered if I’m doing it right or if I’m wasting my time. I’ve gone through different platforms and different themes – thanks to Chris I’ve settled on my latest design (at least for now!). I’ve taken part in different series and themed posts including Travel Thursday, The Friday Read and 100 Word Challenge for Grown Ups.

Through blog writing I’ve made friends and acquaintances. I’ve got to know people like Becca, LacyKaleigh, Amy, Danielle and Koree who I would have never met had it not been for a combination between my blog and their blogs (go read they are fab!). Through blogs I’ve shared in big life events like when Becca’s daughter was born, when Amy delivered her third child (a little girl too!) and when Koree went to college. Not only have I connected with people in other countries I’ve got to know people here in the UK too. I’ve got to know Becca – technically this was via Twitter first but I think our blogs were an extension of that. It’s crazy to think that in a world this big I’d get to know Ruby who lives in Australia and her hubby Branden (he moved from the US to Australia to be with her – now that’s love!).

I thought about how to celebrate this event – in the past I hosted a giveaway and had about 5 entrants – so maybe I’m not in the right place to do that again (just yet). I thought about offering a service like a blog design or something like that but it’s not really one of my talents so maybe it’s the wrong idea.

Somewhere along the line I decided that a series of guest posts was something that I could curate. This kicked off with Rickie on Monday talking about living live to the max, I’ve got two more to come (And a few more if I get volunteers – if you want to write let me know – I’d love to have you).

Happy 5th Birthday to my Blog

082: A Ramble

Hello you lot – how are you?

I am well….well better than I was – my brain decided to wake me up at 5:45 this morning with a splitting headache. So that was the second headache in less than 24 hours – just what I didn’t need. I downed some painkillers and a massive gulp of water and then put a t-shirt over my eyes to keep the sunshine out of my face (the curtains in our room are quite thin – normally I don’t notice but today clearly it was too bright).

I couldn’t be ill today – about a months work has been leading up to training that I was doing my colleagues today so I couldn’t be ill. I dozed off for another 2 and a bit hours which seemed to do the trick – I got up and felt a bit woozy but was back on track by the time I had got to work and had a large glass of juice. Just in time to start the training. I was a bit nervous about the training but the colleagues who I was training kept making jokes and taking the mickey out of each other so in the end of it was okay. The sun shining today which means our office is quite toasty but I’m feeling okay so as long as I keep drinking plenty of water and occasionally go for a walk down the corridor where it’s quite cool I think I will survive today – if not I’ll be coming to work in my three quarter lengths tomorrow.

We finished training around 3:30pm. Today was freakishly quiet. It was one of those days that you don’t want to comment out loud that it’s quiet because then it would go completely nuts (ever notice how the staff on ER or Grey’s Anatomy comment how quiet it is only to then have a mass accident where they are diverting to other hospitals are things like that because they don’t have enough space for the casualties.)

Logo ideas for blog series that's happening next week on my blog to celebrate its blog birthday

I did filing and tidied up. I had a doodle for ideas for a logo for my blog birthday blog posts next week. I’ve got some fab guest posts lined up but you will have to wait until next week for those (I still have spaces so if you want to blog drop me an email) . My blog is five years old next week – that’s 5 years since this post. That also makes it four weeks to my 26th Birthday – that means I have just over four weeks to finish up my 25 before I’m 26 goals. Help! Too many to do and too little time that’s for sure. Maybe I need to work on the ones that I know I can complete for sure.

I’ve decided to ditch I Love Lists Thursday for a few weeks – it was a good idea to start with but I’m not sure I can really come up with interesting lists – so for now it’s retired – it might be back later.

  • Do you have any goals to achieve by your next birthday?
  • How do you decide what you want to achieve?
  • How do you feel when you don’t achieve them or you run out of time?
  • Any suggestions for my “26 before I’m 27″ list?

014: Saturday and A Party

Oh dear it's cold. Then again pretty patterns across my windshield

Today was always going to be a pretty busy day. I’d planned to be all organised and get some clothes thrown into bin bags to take to the charity shop (then again Mummy Steph is encouraging a swishing party so I might be saving them for that instead!)

It started with a trip to town – now I am not a fan of town on a Saturday at the best of times so I told Our Sidekick and CJ that we were going to get up and go – we’d be in town at 9 or just after. We made it into town about 9ish and started on our mission – we had some bits to get and Our Sidekick had a list of shops we were going to look at.

Well it took about 2.5 hours and I was getting bored so I started playing with my phone and with high heeled shoes that I’d never buy because I wouldn’t end up breaking an ankle or face planting the floor – then again I’d probably do both!

Trying on shoes and posing.

The fab/crazy shoes I tried on today.

I’d also planned that I’d get a funky thrifted/charity shop dress for the party this evening but it was a bit of a challenge. I found a really cute dress in the Salvation Army charity shop but it was a size 8 – never going to fit my 14/16 body in that!

I tried on a nice gothic esque skirt in All Ears but it was nearly £30 even in the sale *sad face* (however the shop was warm and smelling amazing again so that was cool and the staff are super friendly in there). I even nipped across the road to Rose Tinted Vintage in Clair Court. I discovered that clearly I like the idea of wearing vintage clothes but don’t know how to make it work for me in practice. I found a nice dress but it was something my Great Grandma might have warn and clearly I was on the wrong track or something. I think I need a lesson in how to dress vintage and not look like your Great Granny.

In the end I decided on the black dress I’d got for December Wedding and add some fab accessories.

Following our trip to town we grabbed lunch and hung out watching Ice Age 3. How cute is Peaches at the end! I headed off for a bath ready to get sorted. Well that was the idea. I was on the bed reading and next thing I knew it was almost 3:30. I’m pretty sure that I slept around 45 minutes.

I got all dressed up and ready and we headed out. I wanted to write some more about the party but I need to sleep so I will write some more tomorrow.

EDIT: So it got to the point yesterday where I needed to go to bed rather than carrying on blogging.

Having looked for a new dress in town, I ended up wearing my black dress that I’d bought for December Wedding. While I was in town I’d got a headband that was made of white beads (they kinda look like pearls – or at least that style of bead) and had a flower.

Hairband

We left the house at about 6:45 – in the past when we’ve had parties at church, CJ had often been organising music or lights or something like that and so we’ve been there for hours before and ended up staying after to help clear up – well with it being “our thank you party” we were told in no uncertain terms that we weren’t allowed to be there early and weren’t allowed to help clear up.We got to church and there were like no spaces – you would have thought someone could have coned off a space for the guests of honour lol.

As we parked my parents were walking down the road to the church building. Our Sidekick was finishing up a call with his Mum so we stopped and had a chat outside the building – I kind of didn’t want to go into church without CJ because I wanted to see his reaction to all the decoration and things that had been done for us. It took a little while and CJ ended up standing in the church foyer still finishing the call with Our Sidekick’s Mum.

Anyway, once that was all dealt with we could get down to the important business of the party. So many people from church had come together to sort it out for us. The Murf and our Connect Group organised the quiz and the hall decorations. Our friend Rikki had been lent CJ’s lights and so he’d set all those up so we had pink and orange lights. On the tables there were silver stars, and depending on which table you were on there were either pink or orange gerberas (orange is CJ’s favourite colour and I think the pink was for me).

The whole party was amazing and I struggled to take it all in (as much as I tried to). I also struggled to speak to all the people who were there for us.

Where You Been Girlie?

It’s nearly two weeks since I blogged and minus a small moment in the middle I didn’t miss it. Is that good or bad? I even questioned if it was time to give up properly.

Then again I think I was just going to be whiny and ignoring my blog was the better option. So what have I been upto while not blogging. Well it’s something like this.

Saturday 3rd

  • CJ and Our Sidekick were play fighting and tickling each other to death – except there was an actual injury this time – a combination of Our Sidekick moving and CJ moving his leg meant that Our Sidekick ended up with a nosebleed – it was all okay in the end as it had stopped within about 20 minutes and he was fine.

Monday 5th

One undecorated tree. Christmas tree festival over for another year.

  • I started the day by going into town and undecorating a Christmas tree for my Mum. She’d been part of the team who sponsored a tree at the annual Christmas Tree Festival. It was kind of depressing taking down a tree at the beginning of December!
  • I then headed to Mum’s to take back the decorations. I was literally in the car about to leave and this is what happened. The guy didn’t even realised that he’d done it!!! Erm hello! You looked straight at me and if your car shook as much as mine did then you would have known. My Dad came to my rescue and chased the car up the street. I was a bit shaken but having my Dad come to the rescue helped me chill again. (Btw I love the reflection in the bumper – I only just noticed that!)

The dent in my car from earlier.

Tuesday 6th

  • Our Connect Group was on Alpha serving again this week and it’s the last week of Alpha so it’s all finished again for another course. We had a good time. Caz was having a bad day so once we’d served dinner and were about to clear up I said to her to go because she was tired and needed an early night and things like that.

Friday 9th

  • We moved office at work – at one point I had a cardboard box just full of cables from three computers I then had to reassemble them all in the new office.
  • I collected Our Sidekick from school and then he came into work for a little while. (Took this picture in the car while I was waiting – I liked how the rain distorted the sunshine) He sat at my desk nearly the whole time and did drawing – we were still setting up and clearing up around ready to start work properly this morning.

It's #raining again. On the #schoolrun

  • We stayed for pizza with my manager and two IT guys who had been moving the server and things. Our Sidekick talked school and art with my manager. My manager was so encouraging about Our Sidekick’s artwork which was awesome. Our Sidekick had copied/drawn Monteriggioni from Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood and it was so good!
  • My blog friend Amy delivered her beautiful baby girl into the world – only a week and a day overdue! Well done lovely and Congratulations she’s so cute!

Saturday 10th

  • My blog friend Becca (who incidentally lives in like the same town or one town over from Amy!) celebrated her daughter’s first birthday! Rock on! Happy Birthday Selah.

Earring kit from my mum.
Christmas Trees as well
Christmas Trees done

  • Mum had given me these earring sets so that I could have nice Christmas earrings – well I made them on Saturday. I had fun – I don’t seem to quite have the hang of making sure that they are both the same length but it seemed to work. You can find the kits at JillyBeads.com.
  • We surprised our friend Bex who is getting married next week. I think she had to cancel her original plans for her hen do due to some family problems but one of the ladies at her church decided that we should have a surprise do. We all met in the church where Bex goes, she was there on the pretext of having a look at the Christmas Tree that had just finished being decorated.

Mulled wine and Christmas crackers at a hen do!! #decemberwedding

Sunday 11th

  • Played bass in the morning service
  • Rehearsed the Christmas Production – tried to choreograph a mimey dance thing for Mary, Joseph and the Angel – might have been easier if my Joseph hadn’t been pulling faces all the way through!
  • Our Sidekick redrew his Assassin’s Creed picture as the first one from Friday got damaged – this time it’s on A3 and so it’s a nice big picture instead of the squared paper that he drew Friday’s version on.
  • Christmas Lunch at Mum’s church – helped with dishing up, serving and washing up.
  • Finished my knitting finally!
  • Watched stupid amounts of TV, Gilmore Girls, The O.C. and Sarah Jane Adventures kept me sane – I think there might have been How I Met Your Mother in there as well but I’d already seen the episodes and was re-watching with Our Sidekick.

Monday 12th

  • CJ said to me before I left for work that he was convinced I’d forget to go to the new office this morning and that I’d go to the old office – well CJ I went to the right office! I was third in today.
  • Kewey got a job!!! WAHOOOOOOO!!!! She starts tomorrow I think which is interesting given it being so close to the end of term but I guess in a way she can then catch on with the ropes before being let lose in January.
  • My manager was sent a comedy large Santa Hat – I had to try it on and take a picture – I couldn’t resist it.

My manager was sent an oversize Santa hat. This is the only way to wear it and see what you're doing. Otherwise it comes down to your shoulders!!

Tuesday 13th

  • I’d meant to post this last night but then got distracted dealing with other issues.
  • I almost finished all my Christmas shopping – one to make and one to buy and then I’m done. Took long enough lol. Next year I might start in September like I did last year.

Happy Birthday!!

Today the lovely Ruby from Sew, Cook, Create

celebrates her 24th Birthday!! Woot Woot

Please wish her Happy Birthday on Twitter or leave her a comment on her blog :)
